rugae), rat (8) and golden hamster (7). We showed that palatal growth rate, spacing and addition rate in mouse/rat were remarkably similar (with respect to the embryo size difference), and that increase to 9 rugae in mouse is achieved by postponing the end of the addition process (hypermorphosis). Such a heterochronic shift may be typical of 1 variations observed among muroid rodents. In contrast, decrease to 7 rugae in golden hamster is attributed to early growth termination (progenesis) of the palate, which correlates with the severe shortening of gestation in this species. Our results provide an experimental support to the intuitive view that terminal heterochronies are especially relevant to meristic evolution of traits that rely on a sequential addition process.

Structural shifts of aldehyde dehydrogenase enzymes were instrumental for the early evolution of retinoid-dependent axial patterning in metazoans.
Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) catabolize toxic aldehydes and process the vitamin A-derived retinaldehyde into retinoic acid (RA), a small diffusible molecule and a pivotal chordate morphogen. In this study, we combine phylogenetic, structural, genomic, and developmental gene expression analyses to examine the evolutionary origins of ALDH substrate preference. Structural modeling reveals that ...
متن کاملVerification of an Evolutionary-based Wavelet Neural Network Model for Nonlinear Function Approximation
Nonlinear function approximation is one of the most important tasks in system analysis and identification. Several models have been presented to achieve an accurate approximation on nonlinear mathematics functions. However, the majority of the models are specific to certain problems and systems. In this paper, an evolutionary-based wavelet neural network model is proposed for structure definiti...
متن کاملA Conceptual Model on Relationship between Structure and Functions in Rangeland Ecosystems
One of the most important issues in structure-function relationship modeling is that each rangeland has numerous functions and each of them can provide the most benefits in a certain state of that ecosystem. In fact, relationship between structure and function can be varied in different states. After presentation of the Linear Structure-Function Model based on the Clementsian succession theory,...
متن کاملA NOVEL FUZZY MULTI-OBJECTIVE ENHANCED TIME EVOLUTIONARY OPTIMIZATION FOR SPACE STRUCTURES
This research presents a novel design approach to achieve an optimal structure established upon multiple objective functions by simultaneous utilization of the Enhanced Time Evolutionary Optimization method and Fuzzy Logic (FLETEO). For this purpose, at first, modeling of the structure design problem in this space is performed using fuzzy logic concepts. Thus, a new problem creates with functio...
متن کاملBiting disrupts integration to spur skull evolution in eels.
The demand that anatomical structures work together to perform biological functions is thought to impose strong limits on morphological evolution. Breakthroughs in diversification can occur, however, when functional integration among structures is relaxed. Although such transitions are expected to generate variation in morphological diversification across the tree of life, empirical tests of th...
